Grandiosity in Bipolar Disorder

Grandiosity in Bipolar Disorder Bipolar Disorder Symptoms Mania and Hypomania Print Grandiosity in Bipolar Disorder By Marcia Purse Marcia Purse is a mental health writer and bipolar disorder advocate who brings strong research skills and personal experiences to her writing. Learn about our editorial policy Marcia Purse Updated on June 25, 2019 Bipolar Disorder Overview Symptoms & Diagnosis Causes Treatment Living With In Children Your Rights Cavan Images/Stone/Getty Images In This Article Table of Contents Expand Prevalence Causes Symptoms Narcissistic Personality Disorder Treatment View All Grandiosity is a symptom experienced by people with bipolar disorder (BD) during manic and hypomanic  episodes. People experiencing grandiose delusions often describe larger-than-life feelings of superiority and invulnerability. In short, it is an exaggerated sense of ones importance, power, knowledge, or identity, even though there may be little evidence to support the beliefs. Prevalence It is estimated that around two-thirds of people with bipolar I disorder will experience grandiose delusions at some point in their illness.?? About half of the people diagnosed with schizophrenia and a large number of people with substance use disorders will experience grandiosity as a manifestation of their illness.?? Grandiose delusions may also be a facet of personality disorders, most especially narcissistic  personality disorder (NDP). Causes Grandiosity  is one of the seven symptoms of a manic or hypomanic episode in bipolar disorder. Within the context of the disorder, grandiosity is considered a mood-congruent delusion consistent with a manic state. During manic or hypomanic episodes, the chemistry and activity of the brain will begin to change,  causing nerve signals  to speed up and neurotransmitter concentrations to rise, especially dopamine (the so-called pleasure neurotransmitter).?? No one knows exactly why this happens, or why the symptoms are severe in some people but not in others. While grandiosity is a common feature of bipolar mania and hypomania, it doesnt occur in everyone with BD. According to the  Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), the presence of grandiosity can be used in combination with other manic or hypomanic symptoms to confirm a diagnosis of BD. Symptoms Grande in French means grand. As such, grandiosity refers to an unrealistic sense of superiority in which you consider yourself unique and better than others. It also infers a disdain for those you consider inferior to you, either by way of class, intelligence, beauty, or heritage. As a symptom, grandiosity exists on a spectrum, ranging from inflated self-esteem to sweeping delusions of grandeur. Grandiosity can be difficult to pin down because the people experiencing the symptom, as well as those around them, may not recognize it as anything more than pompousness, arrogance, or boastfulness. It is only when the behavior is extreme that some, usually friends or family, will realize that behavior is inconsistent with the persons usual demeanor. The fact that the behavior occurs in episodes is the main clue that bipolar disorder is involved. Grandiose delusions are one of the most common types of delusions in BD. Examples of grandiosity include: Exaggerating your own achievementsCriticizing and dismissing others achievements or talentsConstantly boasting and talking about yourselfBelieving yourself to be infallible or invulnerableBelieving that you are more intelligent than othersThinking that common rules dont apply to youActing selfishlyTreating others with disdain or contemptNot caring if you hurt someone with your actionsBeing quick to anger if you are challengedBeing unable to see how your behavior affects othersBeing unable to see how unrealistic your beliefs and actions are How to Recognize a Manic or Hypomanic Episode Bipolar vs. Narcissistic Personality Disorder At times, it can be difficult to distinguish between grandiose thinking during a manic or hypomanic mood and grandiosity as a facet of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).   Having NPD means that you consistently exhibit  traits of self-adoration in a way that interferes with your relationships and well-being. NPD is broadly characterized by self-centeredness, the inability to have  empathy  for others, and the manipulation of others to get what you want. One of the key ways to differentiate grandiosity in BD from grandiosity in NPD is the co-occurrence of mania symptoms.?? Bipolar mania is a set of mood symptoms characteristic of bipolar I disorder that appears in episodes and can include: Euphoric, elevated, expansive, or irritable moodsIncreased energy and a decreased need for sleepRacing thoughtsPressured speech (excessive or frenzied speaking)Tangential speech (constantly changing unrelated topics)Restlessness and increased goal-directed activityImpulsivity with poor judgment and reckless behaviors (including spending sprees, hypersexuality, and needless risk-taking) If grandiosity accompanies any of these abnormal behaviors, bipolar disorder should be explored as a possible cause. While grandiosity can accompany hypomania, a less severe form of mania, it is usually less problematic and easily missed in diagnosis. Another key differentiator is time. Personality disorders like NPD are pervasive patterns that define ones interactions with others. By contrast, bipolar mania or hypomania typically lasts for weeks to months and is not always present. Consequences and Treatment People experiencing grandiosity as a feature of BD may suffer consequences in their personal and professional lives. To those who dont understand the symptoms, grandiosity can make someone seem unforgivably conceited and rude. This can affect interpersonal relationships at home, with friends and family, or at work. Grandiose delusions can impair your judgment and compromise ability to keep or maintain employment. Grandiosity rarely occurs on its own in people with BD and may require medications, counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT),?? and social support to effectively resolve the symptoms. If suffering from  bipolar mania, your doctor may treat you with a mood stabilizer and sometimes an antipsychotic drug to quickly control hyperactivity, sleeplessness, hostility, and irritability. If the behaviors are extreme or potentially harmful, hospitalization may be needed to help bring your moods under control. There is no one drug or psychotherapeutic approach that treats grandiosity on its own. Instead, your doctor will aim to resolve the abnormally heightened mood state that defines bipolar mania. By doing, behavioral extremes, like grandiosity, will also be tempered. Treat Bipolar With the Best Online Therapy Programs

The key is making sure that the process is the same that every employee’s request is fairly considered, even though the outcome may vary. The present of technology in flexible vacation policy may help IBM to overcome the problem of having many colleagues taking vacation at the same time. IBM can create a page for all IBM’s workers-the management information system, to update the newest information and the vacation date employees wanted or planning to take off. Being proactive in the face of change is much better than being reactive in this fast-paced business environment. Fears of abuse. There are some employees who may take advantage of their work situation, no matter what the policy. As one supervisor put it, â€Å"There are always a few bad apples. They have to be dealt with. It’s much better to manage for the good apples. † If employees are well managed, abuses will be kept to a minimum whether the employee works on a flexible arrangement or not. †¢ Skeletons in the closet. Just because flexibility was tried with one employee in the past and didn’t work doesn’t mean that the same outcome is inevitable if it is tried again—especially if the individual is well matched with the flexible arrangement. Mistakes can be used as important tools in making improvements. It takes more time to manage. Interviews with managers at JPMorgan Chase who supervise employees using some flexible work arrangement reveal far fewer problems than managers anticipated: 95 percent of managers say it does not require more time to manage people on flexible arrangements; 88 percent of managers who are managing employees on flexible work arrangements report no negative impact on their ability to supervise; and 66 percent say managing flexible work arrangements enhanced their management skills. The Life Of Abraham Lincoln Essays - Lincoln Family, Illinois

The Life of Abraham Lincoln Although other states such as Indiana lay claim to his birth, most sources agree that Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a backwoods cabin in Hodgeville, Kentucky. In an interview during his campaign for the presidency in 1860 Lincoln described his adolescence as "the short and simple annals of the poor." (p 30). His father Thomas was a farmer who married Nancy Hanks, his mother, in 1806. Lincoln had one sister, Sarah, who was born in 1807. The Lincoln family was more financially comfortable than most despite the common historical picture of complete poverty. They moved to Indiana because of the shaky system of land titles in Kentucky. Because the Lincoln's arrived in Spencer County at the same time as winter, Thomas only had time to construct a "half-faced camp." Made of logs and boughs, it was enclosed on only three sides with a roaring fire for the fourth. The nearest water supply was a mile away, and the family had to survive on the abundance of wild game in the area. Less than two years after the move to Indiana, Mrs. Lincoln caught a horrible frontier disease known as "milk sick.". Thomas Lincoln returned to Kentucky to find a new wife. On December 2 he married Sarah Bush Johnston, a widow with three children, and took them all back to Indiana. Although there were now eight people living in the small shelter, the Lincoln children, especially Abe, adored their new stepmother who played a key role in making sure that Abe at least had some formal education, amounting to a little less than a year in all. To support his family it was necessary that Abe worked for a wage on nearby farms. "He was strong and a great athlete, but Abe preferred to read instead. Although few books were available to a backwoods boy such as himself, anything that he could obtain he would read tenaciously" (p 56). Although his formal education had come to an end, his self-education was just beginning. After a three month flatboat journey along the Ohio and Mississippi, the 19 year old Lincoln returned to Indiana with an enthusiasm for the lifestyles that he had just encountered. Unfortunately, his new-found joy did not last long as his sister Sarah died in childbirth on January 20, 1828. In 1830 the Lincoln family decided to leave Indiana in hopes of a better future in Illinois. It was soon thereafter that Abraham became a leader in the town of New Salem while operating a store and managing a mill. The next step for such an ambitious man was obvious--he entered politics, finishing eighth out of thirteen in a race for the Illinois House of Representatives in August of 1832. Abraham Lincoln was a strong supporter of Whig founder Henry Clay and his "American System." This system that arose from the National Rebublicans of 1824 was in opposition to the powerful Democratic party of President Andrew Jackson. Lincoln agreed with Clay that the government should be a positive force with the purpose of serving the people. Internal improvements were high on both mens' lists, and this stand made the relatively unknown Lincoln popular in rural Illinois from the start. As the Whigs rose in stature throughout the 1830's, so did Lincoln, but not without paying his dues along the way. For eighty days in the spring and early summer of 1832 Lincoln served in the military. On a constant search for Black Hawk, war leader of the Sauk and Fox Indians, he never saw any fighting but he did prove to be a superior leader of men in some of the most trying situations, including threats of desertion. "In return for his eleven and a half weeks of service Lincoln earned a mere $125, but the connections that he made with future leaders of Illinois and the experiencing of life from a soldier's viewpoint proved to be priceless in his future political career" (p 80). During this time Lincoln ran for and won a seat in the Illinois Legislature with bipartisan support. In 1846 Lincoln took his biggest step in politics to that point. He won election to Congress as the only Whig from Illinois. His single term was only

Loaded Language

Loaded Language Loaded Language Loaded Language By Mark Nichol If your parents brought you up vigilantly, chances are that you were admonished to use your words carefully. As far as writing is concerned, that instruction is one of the most valuable lessons you learned. Consider the power of connotation, the sense of a word apart from its denotation, or literal meaning. Unless you have your heart set on being a propagandist, be cautious about the synonym you choose in a particular context. Look, for example, at thin and its associated words: Thin, itself, is an ambiguous term; depending on context, it might connote an healthful or unhealthful appearance. To say that one is lithe, slim, slender, svelte, or willowy, meanwhile, connotes an attractive body type maintained, perhaps, by engaging in physical fitness and/or eating sensibly. However, anorexic, bony, and skinny suggest an excessive thinness. To say, for example, that a fashion model is lithe is complimentary; to describe her as bony is pejorative. (An anonymous wag went further in coining the phrase â€Å"bag of antlers† to suggest a woman whose bones protrude in such an unsightly fashion that she resembles such an object.) Loaded language can have much more loaded consequences. A famous or infamous example is the popularity during the mid-1980s of the term â€Å"freedom fighters,† which Ronald Reagan, then president of the United States, used to characterize counterrevolutionaries fighting the Sandinista government of Nicaragua. Some people observed at the time that the actions of some of these guerrillas, who were being supported by the US government, merited instead the term terrorists and that the Reagan administration was cynically using a term meant to disingenuously associate the counterrevolutionaries (often called contras, from an abbreviation of the Spanish form of that word) with the patriots of the Revolutionary War. The contra controversy was exacerbated by the fact that the Sandinistas themselves behaved at times like terrorists, but this complication didn’t negate the propagandistic taint of â€Å"freedom fighters.† Similar words with negative connotations include militant, which describes someone who may not necessarily engage in combat or even physical violence but is an ardent and perhaps destructive protester, and vigilante; the latter word connotes someone who flouts the rule of law in seeking to uphold it and suggests a dangerous disregard for justice in the course of retribution for unproven crimes. Political propaganda characterizes a given geopolitical entity by a weighted word depending on the writer’s perception of the nature of the political system that entity operates under: Government is a neutral or positive term; regime or junta, by contrast, connotes a dictatorship. Similarly, an academic or a scholar is someone employed in a professorial capacity whose opinions you agree with; if you’re at odds with such a person’s viewpoint, you might label him or her an elitist or refer to the person as someone isolated from reality in an ivory tower. A government employee whose work you support is a public servant; one who has an adverse impact on your quality of life is a bureaucrat. Politicians whose bills propose expenditures you desire are investing in the nation’s infrastructure; those whose legislation you consider wasteful are spending your hard-earned tax dollars. And, perhaps most provocative, people who support the right of women to have an abortion call themselves pro-choice, while their opponents label them pro-abortion. On the other hand, what one person might call an antiabortionist would likely self-identify as pro-life. This post does not advocate avoidance of loaded language; if you wish to express your opinion, you will likely make use of weighted words. But if your intention is to express impartiality, take care in the terms of art you choose. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Principles of Management and Elements of Control Assignment - 1

Principles of Management and Elements of Control - Assignment Example The American Red Cross website can be accessed at http://www.redcross.org/. Questions have been raised about how a nonprofit organization can become more popular and effective -than other organizations such as for-profit organizations offering similar services. There are various points that account for its success and these are stipulated in the fundamental principles of Global Red Cross Network (American Red Cross 2013). One of the principles is that of Humanity, which stipulates that the teams would always work to alleviate all forms of human suffering without discriminating any affected person. The principle of humanity eventually fosters friendship, mutual understanding, peace and cohesion amongst the population it serves. The second principle is that of impartiality which prevents the team from engaging in practices that amount to discrimination based on religiosity, political stand, nationality and social and economic class. Rather, all practices should be informed by the individual needs while giving consideration to the most urgent and critical issues. The third principle, which is closely related to the principle of impartiality, is that of neutrality that bars the team from taking sides in the political, social, religious and ideological controversies. The fourth principle is that of independence. This principle guides that the team should work without undue influence from the third parties such as national politics and religiosity. This is aimed at ensuring that the teams maintain their autonomy. The fifth principle is that of Voluntary service, which rules that the team is not supposed to engage in practices that are profit oriented. The sixth principles is that of unity, which emphasizes that members of the teams should work together to realize the set goals while touching every person in  need, regardless of the country’s geographical region. The last principles are that of universality, which acknowledges that every society across the globe has an equal status and have equal responsibilities in improving the life of every person.

ATPase Site Architecture and Helicase Mechanism Essay

ATPase Site Architecture and Helicase Mechanism - Essay Example Studies have also indicated that a means of communication takes place between the N-terminal and the C-terminal region of archaeal MCM complexes, aiding in the overall high level of conservation possessed by the complex. The beta-7 and beta-8 regions of the N-terminal are composed of highly conservative amino acid similarities, which additionally accounts for the conservative nature of the MCM protein. Although it has been mentioned that MCM proteins are largely responsible for DNA replication and helicase activity, studies indicate as well that the MCM proteins are what not only â€Å"unzip† dsDNA prior to replication but also maintain a separation between the two strands once bound together, in order to efficiently perform DNA replication and synthesis without ssDNA sticking to one another. An equally important structure, similar to MCM proteins and relavant to this topic is the GINS complex. It is necessary to touch on the function of the GINS complex when examining functions and structure of the MCM complex. The GINS complex is composed of 4 protein subunits known as paralogues. Like the MCM complex, the GINS complex is integral in DNA replication initiation and synthesis. The GINS complex works in partnership with Cdc45 (cell division control 45) in regulating the process of recruitment of DNA polymerase (pol and ) to the site of initiation and elongation. The GINS complex is also fundamental in genome duplication as shown in most vertebrates. Additional studies have indicated that the GINS complex, along with MCM proteins and Cdc45 (as well as check point factors) are all involved at replisome at paused DNA replication forks. This indicates that the human GINS complex is an equally important part of DNA replication and synthesis, to the MCM protein complex. Even more recent studies indicate that the GINS complex is present with MCM proteins 2-7 at the progressing replication fork. At this time,

Process of Appendix Removal

Process of Appendix Removal Natalija Miller Process Description of Appendix Removal Appendectomy: The appendix itself is a small, finger-like projection off the large intestine. Appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix due to a block in the opening to the colon, or by an infection (US National Library of Medicine, 2014). An appendectomy then, is the surgical procedure done to remove the appendix, usually in cases where acute appendicitis is present. The procedure is considered highly recommended in cases where appendicitis may be suspected to reduce the possibility of a life-threatening infection due to an appendix rupture (Johns Hopkins Medicine). Causes of Appendicitis: Appendicitis is considered to have multiple causes, including those that involve stools, mucus, bacteria and other organisms like parasites. These cause the appendix to swell, leading to irritation and inflammation. If the appendix then ruptures, those stools, bacteria, etc., then leak into the abdomen and could cause a serious infection. Inflammation of the abdomen due to bacterial infection is known as peritonitis. Antibiotics, further surgery and/or (in some cases) blood transfusions maybe used to treat this condition (Mayo Clinic, 2011). Diagnosis of Appendicitis: Generally, the physician will first inspect the abdomen and evaluate signs and symptoms. Often a light pressure is applied to any areas of pain, and then relieved quickly. Pressing down on the site and letting go quickly should be considerably more painful or discomforting in cases where appendicitis is present. Doctors will often look for what is termed, â€Å"guarding† – the tendency to tighten the abdominal muscles due to the increase in pressure against the inflamed area. Other helpful diagnostic testing may occur to confirm appendicitis (ultrasound, white blood cell count, etc.), or to simply rule other complications out (urine testing for kidney stones) (Mayo Clinic, 2014). It is important to note, however, that there are no tests to completely confirm the existence of appendicitis. Symptoms of Appendicitis: Certain areas and intensities of pain are considered to be more symptomatic than others. It is important to report any of the following to a physician: Pain of the lower right abdomen or pain that travelled there from the midsection. Progressive pain (increase in severity as time progresses). Heightened pain with touch, coughing/sneezing, or certain movements. Nausea and vomiting. Lack of appetite or desire to consume food. Fever/chills. Constipation/Diarrhea Laxatives and other bowel regulating methods are exceptionally dangerous in cases of appendicitis due to their contribution to the risk of rupture. Pain medications should also be avoided to ensure that other sites of pain are not overlooked, preventing a physician from concluding a definitive diagnosis (Johns Hopkins Medicine). Appendectomy Variations: Open Appendectomy: This is a method where an incision will be made in the lower right abdomen – generally no more than 3 inches in diameter – by which the physician can locate and extract the appendix. Laparoscopic Appendectomy: This is performed through several small incisions and a tube-shaped camera (laparoscope) used to locate the appendix for removal. The laparoscope is hooked-up to a monitor for the surgeon to view during the procedure. This method is not only considered to result in less scarring (shown in Figure 1 below), but also lessen the amount of pain surgery results in, decrease length of hospital care, shorten recovery period, and lower infection rates (Johns Hopkins Medicine). Figure 1: Laparoscopic Appendectomy incision site Possible Risks: There are risks associated with the procedure, which include: Infected incision site. Peritonitis. Obstructed bowels (Johns Hopkins Medicine). Possible bleeding Reactions to anesthesia Pus build-up (US National Library of Medicine, 2014). Other risks may be possible depending on specific medical conditions – report to the physician along with any concerns about the procedure (Johns Hopkins Medicine). Procedure: Before: The details of the procedure will be extensively described, as which point permission to perform said procedure will be requested. A list of medications or medical concerns will be collected, and a sedative or anesthesia will be given to induce a relaxed state, allowing the operation to begin. During: All clothing and jewlery will be removed and a gown will be provided to change into. An intravenous (IV) line will be placed in the arm, wrist or hand. Physicians will request a supine position of the operating table (laying on back). An anesthesiologist will monitor all vital signs during the appendectomy. Open Appendectomy: Through the incision in the lower right quadrant, the abdominal cavity will be opened by separating the abdominal muscles, and the appendix will be removed through a process involving sutures (a series of stitches). In the case of a rupture, the cavity will be rinsed thoroughly with saline and drained. The incision will then be cleansed with an antiseptic to reduce the risk of infection. Laparoscopic Appendectomy: A number of incisions will be made for the laparoscope and the instruments needed to extract the appendix. The abdominal cavity will be inflated with carbon dioxide through one of the incisions to allow for a clearer visual. Once the appendix is located it is tied off with sutures and removed. At the end of both methods, the appendix is examined in a laboratory setting, the incisions will be sealed and the wounds will be dressed with a sterile gauze (Johns Hopkins Medicine). Returning to Daily Living: After the procedure, it is recommended that walking take place within a few hours or the following day. Pain medication may be administered to provide a more comforting environment. It is important to progressively increase the solidity of foods to ensure that the body can still consistently regulate itself. Once discharged (usually after a day or two), the incision site must be kept clean and dry (US National Library of Medicine, 2014). Avoid any strenuous activities until the follow –up (2-3 weeks after surgery), for a physician’s recommendations. It is extremely important to notify a physician if any of the following problems arise: Lasting fever of over 101 degrees Fahrenheit. Any irritation at incision sites. Inability and/or lack of desire to consume fluids. Continuous coughing, shortness of breath and/or trouble breathing. Inability to have bowel movements (Johns Hopkins Medicine). Recovery to the point where normal, everyday activities can resume will generally take place between 2-4 weeks after being discharged (US National Library of Medicine, 2014). Kate Chopin s The Awakening - 1875 Words

The definition of feminism is the â€Å"advocacy of women s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.† The Awakening, by Kate Chopin, was written in 1890 during the height of the women s suffrage movement, and essentially the public felt that the author â€Å"went too far† due to â€Å"the sensuality† of the protagonist (Toth 1). The â€Å"male gatekeepers† that scrutinized her work saw her piece as a statement that â€Å"the husband is a drag†, and that traditional American values should be forgotten (Toth 1). In truth, Chopin did not think that American values, such as motherhood and marriage, were something to be forgotten. She stated outright that â€Å"woman’s truest duties are those of wife and mother, but those duties do not demand that she shall sacrifice her individuality† (Toth 3). However, Chopin’s own literary creation, Edna Pontellier, is completely opposed to the thought of a woman b elonging to anyone. The unhappy woman states outright in the novel that she is â€Å"no longer one of [her husband s] possessions to dispose of or not† (Chopin 102). She believes her entire identity should be outside the influence of others. This makes her â€Å"for the most part †¦ alone† (Ringe 5). The feminist themes and pessimistic tones of The Awakening reveal a parallel between the protagonist and the author due to different factors that influenced both of their developments.
